Jennifer Whitty is a systems design educator, researcher, and designer. Her research and practice focus upon fashion design intersecting with holistic systems, ecology, designing for transitions, zero/minimal waste thinking, social innovation, entire value chain, equity, justice, futuring, resilience, and post-growth. Originally from Ireland, she has worked as a designer and educator in New York, Paris, London, Wellington, Copenhagen, Dublin, Donegal, Limerick, Tallinn, Xi'an, Shanghai, and Beijing. Her work, as an educator, designer, consultant and researcher aims to usher in a new era of deep systemic change for global fashion, that is expansive and diverse, rooted in social and environmental justice. She specialises in reimagining mindsets, models, and systems for fashion through the integration of theory, and practice. Jennifer publishes and exhibits widely on fashion and sustainability in both academic and popular media, working with various global clients including Conde Nast, and Future Learn. She is an Editorial Board Member of the first International Journal of Sustainable Fashion & Textiles. She was Guest Co-Editor of a special issue of the academic journal 'Fashion, Style, and Popular Culture' by Intellect, 'Sense of Time and Place' with Associate Professor Noël Palomo-Lovinski at Kent State University. She strongly believes in global diversity and consideration of multiple worldviews and values and has been engaged in multi-staged sustainable fashion projects in mainland China since 2015, with Xi’an Polytechnic University (西安工程大学) Tsinghua University (清华大学) Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts (上海视觉艺术学院 ). She is one of the first foreign recipients of the prestigious Thousand Talents Program Scholarship (海外高层次人才引进计划) 2018-2022 leading a team of researchers in China to define, explore, and develop expansive sustainable fashion systems.
